Gahoe-dong Catholic Church

op’us Architects

Gahoe-dong Catholic Church is the starting point of the first Seoul pilgrimage route for Catholics. It is difficult however to feel greeted by the atmosphere of the village in the widest four-lane road in Bukchon. Regulations already premise development and large buildings are filling the street. Unlike the atmosphere of a village thronged with tourists, it is hard to find any place to drop in except cafés and shops. There are few public rest rooms. Here a church as a public place has been built. A church over 3,000㎡ is the largest resident of the space here. In order to match this church with the landscape of small houses in a huddle, the building is divided into three parts and two thirds of programs have been placed underground. The architect considered five gardens for movement and views prior to the building itself. Hanok (the traditional Korean house) is placed by the road and the greater mass of chapel and priest’s office is hidden behind to resembles its surroundings.
After passing the lower garden and inner garden busy with visitors, a short trip can be made toward the chapel in quiet meditation. The pause at the end of the stairs is connected to the garden, where noises get thin, and the mini garden is in the hall of the chapel, revealing the backyard of the neighbouring building. The sunshine alone makes the chapel for 300 people fill with piety. The sky garden is open on the rooftop where people can freely enjoy the landscape of Gahoe-dong. Only when a place is used more than ever imagined or planned, can a place become ‘good place’. The value of this place will be made by the people who visit. I expect the value would be delivered to its surroundings and felt more deeply by its people. written by op’us Architects
