On Apr. 25, the winner of the Design Proposal Competition for a New Construction at the Site of the Former Central Police Station in Dongseong-ro was announced. In this competition, Daegu Metropolitan City requested the construction of a new cultural complex on the former site of the central police station to revitalise. By showcasing a symbolic and also practical design, in spite of the limited scale of the site at 99.2m2 and other constraints such as having to keep the building under four floors with no basements while securing at least 4m of building setback line from the border of the west-adjacent street, the winning proposal by KKKL (principal, Kim Kiwon) demonstrated what small-scale public buildings should aspire to be. Using the motif of ancient Greek amphitheatres, the winning design proposed a small and semicircular outdoor stage with a creative but also concise form at the building¡¯s lower levels. This outdoor stage was praised especially for responding well to the context of Dongseong-ro Entrance Plaza and its vicinity: aside from functioning as a seating place for the audience, it can also be a staircase, a resting place, a gathering place, and so on.
