SPACE March 2026 (No. 700)

Hapjeong Artplex is a commercial building consisting of five floors above ground and three basement levels. To naturally draw people from the street into the basement-level café and independent cinema, an external staircase and sunken plaza were created to connect directly to the underground level. In this space, users of the café and cinema intersect, generating an urban scene in which the flow from the street extends seamlessly into the basement. Each floor is planned as an autonomous shared space where movement and stasis, viewing and rest, are encouraged to overlap through the expansion of vertical circulation areas. The above-ground stairwell functions as a display window for the shop on the second floor, while the expanded stair landings on the third through fifth floors operate as flexible zones for exhibitions, lectures, and relaxation. For the exterior façade, a man-made marble with a horizontal grain was selected. The material¡¯s light-absorbing quality and heavy texture establish a subtle and balanced connection to the building¡¯s form. The planes of the mass, created through diagonal setback regulations, interlock again with the diagonally carved first-floor volume that enables basement access, introducing tension to the city¡¯s orthogonal order.
